In today's blog post, we'll introduce you to the special active ingredient of juniper berries. Juniper is a member of the cypress family and is native to the northern hemisphere. The juice of the berries has been used in medicine since antiquity as an anti-inflammatory (antiseptic) and diuretic. Hippocrates himself applied the berries externally to treat fistulas and wounds. In homeopathy, this special active ingredient is primarily indicated for acute or chronic kidney inflammation and edema.
Juniper is characterized by its short, needle-like leaves. In autumn, the branches bear dark berries, also known as cones. With approximately 7,000 subspecies, juniper is one of the most widespread conifers in the world. It grows abundantly, particularly in North America, as well as in Europe, Asia, southern Greenland, and North Africa. It also thrives in Mediterranean regions and near the sea.
The slightly yellowish oil is obtained by steam distillation of the wood and dried berries. Up to 200 kg of wood are needed to produce one liter of oil.
It strengthens oily skin and combats blackheads, acne, and eczema. Furthermore, it has a very strong cleansing, detoxifying, healing, and soothing effect. The skin is cleansed, wound healing is accelerated, and redness is reduced.
Combined with the fruit extract of the dwarf saw palmetto, it has skin-conditioning, anti-inflammatory, and sebum-regulating properties (sebum = skin oil, sebum). The inhibition of the enzyme 5α-reductase is also highly interesting for cosmetics because it can reduce increased sebum production (sebum = skin oil, sebum) and thus oily shine.
